Question Photoshop CS2 Questions

This is the 1st time I have ever used a forum or chat room and not entirely sure how they work.

I do most of my work on Adobe Ill CS2 (PC) but occassionaly use Photoshop as well. I recently purchased a pic from a Photo website.
It came with a white bkgd that I can not get rid of. I duped the image then used my magic wand in the white area. I inversed the image and
tried to move the remaining image with the alt key. It looked it was taking the image "only" but when I got it to Illustrator the white bkdg was still there.

I know I have removed this type of bkdg in the past but just can't remember the step I am missing and could not find it in my books.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
