this might just be my personal opinion, but it seems a little presumptuous for a person to apply a label to themselves. i think if a critic, or a job position, or an observer labels someone as an artist or designer, so be it. but i think taking the appellation on oneself simply because that is an interest, or because it is something you like to do, or even if you get paid to do it, it seems a little much. as an example, if i met someone and i asked them what they did, and they replied: "i am an artist," i would think they were a big-headed crackpot. unless, i happened to run into eugene-louis boudin or some other dead person. on the other hand, if i met someone who said: "i am a graphic designer," i would be left with the impression that they worked at a graphic design studio or something like that. i think a lot of it has to do with ego and self identity. personally, i think of myself as a crackpot and a bum.
