Default Getting into the industy

There are some basic rules which you can follow ( or not ) into getting the design industry. Well, this is what I have realised.

1. Qualifications are NOT a must. Not everyone needs a degree. I have no degree. Nor any qualifications in Graphic design.

2. A GOOD selection of work, which shows variety in your portfolio is a must. This encourages potential employers to see all of your design strengths and your potential.

3. Be selective. Select about 15 pieces to display in your portfolio, and make sure they are your strongest pieces of work, even if they are not for the biggest client's you have worked with.

4. Being honest. If you don't know how to do something, be honest in an inerview situation. This wills ave you later on if you agree to do something you have no clue about.

5. Get an onlineportfolio. An online precense is essential to promoting yourself as a designer.

6. Useful desgn. If you are going to display anything online, make sure it has use, flash intros on sites usually have about a bounce rate of 50%-70% from my experience.

7. Quality VS Quantity VS Quickness. Only produce your BEST work for a client. If a project is boring, make it interesting. As a designer that is your job.

8. Willingness to learn. In an interview situation, provide examples in your work which you feel you could have used another method to do, or how you could improve using software you don't yet know.

9. Be clued up on the latest design trends.

These are basic guidelines which I'll probably add to at some point!

Hope this helps.

Oh and one I didn't mention. Learn to spell, which is what i'm working on right now.
