I actually prefer gill sans for print, you could of course go for a classic serif-font, but especially if you're applying for design-job you don't want it to be in Times (and I'm still not conviced of the beauty of Garamond, and anyway that's not for a resume
And I agree that small type is beautiful, but you don't want them to sit squinting to read your 7pt helvetica with 30% opacity and loads of whitespace
Even through it would look pretty.
