In order to learn how to crate a wordpress template you need to know:

1)XHTML
2)CSS (create sites without the use of tables)
3)PHP

I see you already got links to good resources for learning CSS and XHTML, good job WPCandy, nice share, now all you need to do is learn a bit of PHP.

Do you have any programing experience? If so then a small "PHP for Dummies" or even the PHP documentation would be grate for you. If on the other hand you have no idea what if,while and for is then try this site, this dude explains everything from starting the design in Photoshop to sliceing the image, codeing the XHTML part of the site, adding the PHP part and uploading to final work to your server.

The site is http://www.wpdesigner.com/

Just I case you hate surfing : http://www.wpdesigner.com/2007/08/13...rdpress-theme/

Enjoy, I hope this helps you.

You honestly don't need to know full out PHP. WordPress uses special PHP tags so you only have to memorize or know those PHP tags.

And yes Small Potato is a WordPress guru and I learned from him.

I am having a hard time trying to create a vertical menu bar with buttons out of the "pages" list. To change that I need to edit the function that print the list with the pages and make it be a list of divs... That requires a bit of PHP, and it's part of design in my opinion, I don't have to change the logic of the algorithms, only the outputting format.

Good point, but you can easily hardcode those buttons instead of using the wp_list_pages tag.

Anyway, you seem to know a lot about WordPress. Do you have a site or blog?

I guess you're also right with the "hardcore" stuff but a real flexible template needs to have flexible, dynamic content, and the menu, the sidebar, those are flexible dynamic items, they change very often.

I do have a small blog about photoshop, but it's not related to wrodpress. I want to start creating wordpress templates because I saw on many forums that those templates are sold cheap, fast and easy. They could be a nice source of income for me in this new year. I started to learn wordpress 1 month ago, and thanks to my XHTML,CSS and PHP background knowledge I got it straight in no time!

No problem Brian. If you get on MSN tonight, ask any questions.

@Agilius: Very true. If you can, I'd actually like to know how you're going to edit the function to add DIVs.

I own a blog on WordPress, so if you're interested in being a contributor, let me know.
