Since the graphic design magazines thread went so well I decided to create a graphic design books thread. I love collecting design books so everyone share those must have design books.
You can see a big list I made here, but there are so many more I want: 30 Delightful Graphic Design Books I will post some other books later as well. |

Contemporary Graphic Design by Chalotte and Peter Fiell. Maybe more of a showcase but contains some notes by the designers and is invaluable for inspiration and refrence!
from amazon: Packing a powerful visual punch Contemporary avant-garde graphic design This compendium showcases the extraordinary cutting-edge work of 100 of the world's most progressive graphic designers, from the hard-hitting political messages of Jonathan Barnbrook to the lyrical digital compositions of Peter Saville to the iconoclastic imagery of Stefan Sagmeister. Alongside the array of visually stunning and thought-provoking advertisements, CD covers, posters, packaging, websites, and corporate identities are texts by each designer expressing his or her individual approach to graphic design practice as well as personal insights into the motivations that lie behind the work. An accompanying introductory essay highlights the current issues surrounding graphic design practice, from the ascendancy of digital tools to the amorality of consumerism. By presenting a provocative survey of the latest, most experimental and forward-looking graphic design from around the globe, this exciting book provides a unique and totally unforgettable snapshot of where the discipline stands today and hopefully offers directions for its future. Contemporary Graphic Design is absolutely essential to anyone interested in the power of images. --- Pictoplasma is essential of you like character design! - from amazon: From the worlds of drawing, graphic design and painting, Pictoplasma examines the latest tendencies in character design. Having closely coincided with the character design movement since 1999, Pictoplasma presents a new, incomparable collection of what has become the world's most popular visual language. Through playful sampling and visual remixing, these characters evade established pictorial norms, and confront the viewer directly and emotionally, regardless of cultural background. Focusing on the graphical roots of contemporary character culture, this volume examines the essential qualities that empower these reduced character depictions with an universal, anthropomorphic appeal. Over 360 pages feature the fresh and surprising work of over 250 international artists, designers and newcomers, including Ana Bagayan, Friends With You, Fons Schiedon, Akinori Oishi, Koralie, Klaus Haapaniemi, Eun-Ha Paek, Nicholas Deakin, and Gary Taxali, among others.Vast in scope and always at the forefront, The Character Encyclopaedia is a comprehensive guide to the most intriguing figures populating the character universe. Graphic Design School The book that is required reading where I study, and although I admit I haven't read it out yet it's a very good book for refrence and some basic design theory. not how to use photoshop but actual design theory ![]()

My own personal collection has grown to over 300 design books - I think it is an addiction.
Some that I always recommend to designers are posted on Creative Latitude (I'm in the process of updating the list) This is a list of books in which my work is featured or my business is written about. It has some great titles as well - especially for someone interested in identity design. - J.

I've got the Color Index, and it's extremely useful for finding color formulae (CMYK) in a pinch for print projects--more reliable than screen color, saves me tons of time, and it's much cheaper than a PMS flip-book.
