Whenever I can I start onscreen, but recently I've found it much easier to work through a project after sketching out the idea first.
I definately revert to the pencil when I'm sat with a blank screen, usually ends up with something coming out of the scribbles |

I start out on pencil & paper, but only in words (concepts, I guess) that I use to guide my thoughts/make associations. I almost always handle the entire graphic process digitally.

There were some times when I started directly on the computer, but now I prefer sketching first. Sometimes, after sketching on paper, I like to cut the shapes and form new ones by bending them. There are good chances to see something new and intriguing in this process, and maybe reproduce it on screen..

Me, I don't really have the skills to apply paper drawings to computer yet, and besides that my drawings don't always look so great. Where my skills start is in doing 3d modeling. I use a open source commercial free program called blender 3d that does amazing work. Took me about a year to learn the basics but I'm doing well with it so far, and still learning.
So as far as Computer vs. Paper - I would have to go with Computer.

For almost everything i go straight to the computer. I sketched out my logo a little bit but not much.

I used to be all about the computer, but now I find that I'll hate myself if i don't have a design process to show for once I've completed something. I just have to know how i got certain ideas for something so i can always look back.
Sketch first for me. |

Pencil all the way. I used to prefer just diving straight into it on the computer but without the preliminary work and the sketching then your design wouldn't work as well.
Sketching is quick and it allows you to get any ideas at all down there and then. Not only that but you can see potential flaws in your design before you begin putting in a lot of effort designing it. I personally brainstorm and doodle, just anything that comes to mind and then develop sketches which in turn become my starting point for a design. ![]() |

My best design ideas and concepts very seldom come to me while sitting at a computer. I never get inspired staring at a blank screen. Usually the "brain farts" occur while I'm gardening, in the shower, driving in my truck, in a particularly boring meeting, etc. Most often it means scribbling the idea down on whatever is handy at the time.

I almost always sketch out something first. not all the time but it really helps a lot. I think the path to really solid design is to develop the concept through sketches, or in your head if you are able, and once you know what you are going to do you should go for it using the most effective means available. A computer is just a tool. If you can't make a good design without using a computer then you probably suck at design. Computers are incredibly useful tools but gaphic designers have been producing great work for years and years with out computers.
"I also think that the larger audience out there responds to work when they can see that a real human being made it. So much of the work today just looks as though it was spit out by a computer. It doesn’t have any fingerprints or cat hair on it." - James Victore |
