Default pencil vs. computer

So many teachers, tutors, tutorials etc. keep saying that design should always start with a pencil and a piece of paper. While this is often a good idea, I would say that sometimes great design doesn't always start with pencils. How do you work? Do you feel that your creativity streams through your hand or do you visualize it in your head, and feel it's easier to recreate onscreen?

I'm all on-screen. I've tried pencil and paper but nothing works. I just sit down in photoshop and start working.

I'm also on-screen, the only thing I use paper for is the rough ideas - the starting point

Keeps things simple and easy and you can jot down all the plans as well. Good way to see how things progress also.

I would say most of the time I start right away on screen, but on certain occasions I like to sketch things out. I like sketching out logo concepts on paper its just much faster to sketch concepts this way and I also sketch layouts sometimes on paper just to kind of get an idea of what I wanna use for a grid.

Yea, I guess I agree with you Gino. I've sketched 2 of the logos I've done. I can't say it really helped significantly, but I did it anyways.

The only time I have written with a pencil is when I was surfing the web looking for design elements I wanted to incorporate into my custom theme.

I would have to say a little of both. Usually whenever I'm doing logos and web comps I start out in pencil. I always sketch here and there even if it's not related when I'm trying to come up with ideas. But usually (except for logos and web comps) I'm going straight to the computer.

To be honest I think it has a lot to do with your background and education whether or not you do this. A lot of older designers insist on doing this. Right now I'm attending The Art Institute and they promote this as well.

i'm the same i do a little bit of both, when ever an idea pops up I sketch it out before i forget. I'd say about 50% of the time I start sketching as I can see how its going to look a lil faster before I start at the computer.

i have never been very good at drawing, so sketching has always intimidated me. I want to be more of sketcher just because I feel that it helps you understand your though process and composition.

Yeah I used to be much better at drawing when I was younger and I've kinda lost it. Id love to pick it up again and get myself a nice stylus from Wacom.

Funny that's just how I was. I use to be able to pick up a pencil and re-draw anything I see. Now, not so much. I'm really jealous of people who can draw characters from their mind in such detail.

You definitely need to get a wacom. I have a 6x8 Intuos3 it helps so much with everything. I am pretty decent at coloring though... I just really wish I could get good at drawing (without the practice, haha).
