I am currently finishing up a two year New Media program. I too believe that it is important to have in class education, it gives you a better understanding design principles. Being critiqued I believe is an asset, if you cannot take criticisms you are in the wrong industry.

Design For me is Problem Solving (although I am not good at it ).
Someone once told me that 'as Designer we are neuro Surgeons not artists'.
We use Art as a medium to communicate a message or to Solve a problem.

I will be applying to Cal Arts, Art Center College of Design(ACCD), MICA, RISD and maybe SVA!

Why not:
as Designers we are neuro surgeons and art is our tool
?

The question if graphic design is art is huuuuge (maybe we should start another thread about this?).

I would say the main difference out of doing a design degree or something similar to self teaching is the qualification you get at the end. I suppose if you need to submit a CV to a design company and you don't have any qualifications then they may just not consider you.

However, if you have the creative flair and the ability then there is no harm in not doing the course. If you can get into the industry you can just work your way up without the need of qualifications.

Im doing an A level in graphic design at the moment and whilst I haven't learnt much in terms of technical ability, I have learn't more about the process of projects and how to think about the design. Afterall, there is more to design that making it look nice.

I'm a art design major at Cal State so hopefully I'll learn alot more than when I was learning from others.

Its probably better because I would think people would want to hire a wducated designer rather than a self taught one

Although, I don't think its an absolute necessity to study design.. Lots of Famous Graphic Designers were self Taught. David Carson is one of them!

I pretty much taught myself everything, I'm not super good at it but I think practicing and coming up with your own techniques is better than having somebody tell you what to do. I might take a few real drawing lessons in the future if I continue illustrating because I'm not that good ad drawing the human body. When it comes to program I think playing around a bit will get you a lot further than taking a class. Too bad the chance of getting a real job is higher if you actually have a degree..

looks like, and I know from self-experience that it's important to have that fire or spark, and really burn for what you do, be keen to learn, I'm also self taught but I'm starting school in the fall.

I just applied to enter a programme in Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication. I can't wait to learn more about the fundamental stuff like drawing and colors. Never had that kind of education learning on my own.
