A really cool think would be to fully design something in photoshop, then tearing it appart vetically, and then paint the other half like it would be in photoshop.

Thats pretty cool! I was thinking about doing something clever like that!

I was thinking about ripping up photos and rearranging them and using print making and all sorts of random graphicy stuff! I guess it can always be scanned and Photoshopped again!

Radical rooster or you can use this aproach, this is a website I made as a school projects. Take real-life elements and throw them together. This is ismply to pieces of paper, one with doodling on it, a picture of stones I made into a tile, and photoshop/dreamweaver. I don't say "make a website", but that's also a way to combine real life elements with digital art

I have to say I am inspired! Thanks loads!

Maybe not doing the same thing as you did but some doodles on a scanned piece of screwed up paper would make an awesome background especially after some Photoshopping AND its physical use of materials!

Thankies!

Its the exact same at my college.
But the reason behind it is because, your not trying to make something pretty. Your learning processes and experimenting.
And teachers tend to group all mac stuff as one process, so even though you will be exploring deeper into photoshop, its just like playing with a set of shading pencils.
So you need to delve into paint, inks, wax, print, pencils and maybe even 3D.

That is whats mine was like last year, but on my foundation year, my teacher is all about doing development, which im really bad at, and hence why im not doing so well.

It's really annoying! Digital design is the direction I want to go so I want to continuously use it so I can improve and learn, yet being told to try using physical more arty techniques just uninspires me and generally my work isnt as good. I know its about learnign, but I'd ratehr learn about stuff I'm interested in and could benefit from rather than stuff I probably wont use! I'm really not good at drawing, and don't you find when you are doing something you aren't good at you don't enjoy it as much?!

There really isn't anythign I can do, I just found it strange how despite having all this new hardware and software, not only are we not being taught how to use it, but we are being encouraged not to use it!

Never mind though! I will try and get away by saying experimenting with photography isn't using a Mac! Hehe!

you could do your final piece completely out of photoshop, but if you do scamps and some experiementing with print and such, and evaluate how you feel these don't convey the message you want, and how photoshop does

I can understand where the teacher is coming from actually...

Digital art is essentially an extension of traditional art. Certainly it can all be done without a knowledge of physical art, but I'll bet if you asked the top digital artists whether they first use dummies, they'll all say yes.
There's a pretty generally accepted reason for this and while I don't understand it completely, I've used it to my advantage a number of times.
Your brain and your reality are essentially physical entities and as such, information is filtered through in a physical manner. Creativity blossoms with physical stimulation.

Not to mention the fact that, beyond web design (and you could argue that a mouse, a keyboard, and a monitor are physical extensions of the field), digital design has a physical product at some point and its important to work with those products in a hands-on way before completely abandoning them.
Similarly, in order to get a bachelor's of any degree, you have to take general education courses. These are there to broaden your world view and create a standard of knowledge that your degree represents. This is all in hopes that this broadened view will contribute, at least in a small way, to your concentration.
