Default Niche or wide spread?

Hi Guys,

I'm soon to graduate (hopefully) from an interactive media productions course. On the course we are taught a whole host of skills with which to go on with and earn lots of money.

I was just wondering what you guys think is best to do... specialise and choose your strongest skill or advertise the range of skills.

Would clients prefer to understand what you offer ie web designer.

Or would more clients be open to you if you advertise all of your skills ie web design, graphic design, animation, 2d and 3d game design, photography etc etc.

What do you guys think?

I think I would say that I specialise in web design.
but that I have skills in graphic design, animation, 2d and 3d game design, photography etc etc.

Say you do state-of-art webdesign and also have skills in grphic design, animation etc. Think you'll get better paid jobs that way.

Don't specialize. Diversify. I think YouTheDesigner had a good article a while back stating that a lot of companies are looking for a "SuperDesigner" that can do it all. The more creative elements you can handle the more valuable you are.

I think I asked a while back on somebodies business card critique whether a position of Graphic/Web Designer was the way to go or to just leave off the title and focus on "Design Solutions" meaning you can a bit everything. I never received a reply but I still believe it is a valid question. Your portfolio should showcase a bit of everything I believe but not too much of one specific field.

The answer to your question is ADVERTISE ALL OF YOUR SKILLS! This is coming from somebody who has talked to plenty of companies in the market looking for people like that. If you don't fill comfortable with that then specialize. Depends on what you want.

My question is what is the title of a "SuperDesigner" and how do we authenticate that, I guess????

I mainly do identity design, but I still do other work as well. I try and avoid website projects because they can get very complicated and eat up a lot of your time.
