Default Do you call yourself an artist?

I know the art vs. design thing has been raised before, but here it is again, slighty different. Cause this is about YOU
Do you call yourself an "artist"? And optional: why?

My art teacher would hate me for saying this :P But... No

I call myself a designer, because I like to design, Im not really a fan of drawing.

I like to draw scamps and sketches, to help develop some ideas.
But never really got into the whole observational drawing scene.

Although I draw, paint, and create digital art as well as design, I find it insulting to true artists to call myself one.
I look at the works of the greats and even the not-so-greats and my intellectual capacity concerning art is so miniscule by comparison that it feels a bit like a child saying 'I'm not little.'

That is not to say design cannot be art, because if you look at the two disciplines, many of the same processes are done -- designers just define theirs a little more.

I think designers are artists for sure. In the end everyone gets paid. Even the masters were commissioned to do work. The highly commercial aspect of design tends to give it a bad rap, its just that not many places or people commission graphic designers to do graphic design for "arts sake".

But designers work with color, space, lighting and everything else just like any other artists does. We all use different tools and mediums and many of us started off drawing or even going back farther to when we were kids and doing painting and arts and crafts

To me art has a lot to do with composition . You can give 10 people the same ingredients to work with and not all of the end products are going to be delicious . It's about ratio , proportion and balance . I have seen landscaping that is art . I think that if you use " the greats " as your base point for comparison you are limiting yourself to a tiny sliver of what art has the potential for. When all is said and done art is subjective , and your gonna like what you like.

I guess the definition's blurred on that but we could call ourselves 'artist' but the room for interpretation's veered away.

Don't get me wrong -- the way I see it, art is anything that is a product of creative thought. The way you hang a picture on the wall could be art, if you intend it to be that way.

I was merely saying that I don't think its right to classify myself in the same area as someone like Rapheal, Picasso, etc.
I find it, as I said earlier, insulting to true artists to put myself anywhere near them. The level of thought and skill put into their works is many multitudes of levels above what I am currently functioning at.

By that same token, I think Paul Rand is a 'great.'
I was not commenting on other's right to call themselves artists, I just think that calling MYSELF one is to degrade what the word holds.

Just to throw another bone to the dogs

The word I used is artist... is it any difference between an artist and someone who just makes some art once in a while? If a childs drawings are art, then are all children artists? Hmmm

I call myself both. I do a lot of graffiti and I consider that a form of art. but professionally I'd call myself a designer. I probably wouldn't mention that I draw and paint graff in a Job interview. But yeah it's such a hard thing to define and this automatically leads back to the question of what art is. Art can be Damien Hirst's skull with diamonds or a stuffed animal in a glassbox so why can a logo or a website not be art? And if you like childrens drawings then it can be art for you. Some people do childish styles on purpose. Oh well I'm rambling on and it's Friday so I'm gonna indulge in the art of consuming large amounts of alcohol Have a good weekend!
