Default "Just grab it from my website"

I know we have all heard this before. I'm still struggling to come up with a concise answer. When you are designing a printed piece for a client and you request photos or a logo, 9 times out of 10 you'll hear this answer. I've shown samples of the a low-res image grabbed from the web next to a hi-res image for comparison. But I am trying to come up with a short paragraph that explains it as best possible to the average person.

Just ansver politely that "for you to have the best possible result of this project, I will need a high-resolution image to work with, if webgraphics are used in printed pieces it may result in poor quality. If you decides that I shall use images taken from the web then you have to take responsibility that the outcome may be variable in quality" or something to that effect. Don't try to make your employer look stupid, but explain that he may be sitting with a poorer piece of designwork from you, and this must be his risk to take, not yours.

Thanks for your post. I have gone that route before. But I am actually working a contract position now and dealing with internal people at the company I am working at. Placing lo-res images and getting it printed with those images is not an option. I need a short, concise statement that I can pass on, that explains the whole scenario and makes the best case for them to understand. I still know some will get it and some won't. I take too much pride in my work as well to just run lo res images. I know no one will be happy once the printed piece comes out. I'll go a different route if I have to just to avoid that.

Just say "I need a hi-res, version of your logo or the print quality will be really bad."

Then address the questions from there. If they don't know what you mean by hi-res tell them "a really large JPEG or a .eps vector version of there logo."

I've dealt with a lot of companies in the past and heard exactly what you mentioned. The best way is to send them a quick statement and see what the DO understand and then go from there. Usually if they don't know what you talking about your statement will at least get them to ask the write questions or get you to the person who does know about what you need.

Usually you'll be able to pull a logo off a PDF document as well. Just open it up in Illustrator and the logo might still be in vector format. If they've given you any .pdf's of already standing collateral you might want to try it.

Lastly you can try recreating there logo which usually sucks to do but I've done it before just because it too SOOOOOOOO long for some really big companies to get back to me.
