Hi Nr

a great way to start out creating your portfolio and building a small client list at the same time is by taking a drive around your neighbourhood, and find all those existing businesses that have rubbish logos and redesign as you see fit. Develop a set of stationary and maybe a homepage layout. Do this for 6 companies and build up your portfolio. When you are happy then take a wonder in to there businesses and show them what you have done, offer the design at a discounted rate and ask for a testimonial.

Pay these people a regular visit every 3 months and i can assure you will win them over as a client over a period of time if not immediatly and develop a professional portfolio.

Every portfolio should contain three examples of branding, three web layouts, three page spreads, three alternative design and a few examples of photography and where the images were used on a design.

Search the web for as many design sites as possible and jsut start creating projects for fun or redoing business identities and sites.

But, make sure you include your school work in your school portfolio. I once showed too much outside work in my portfolio and the school seemed to be offended I did not include enough class assignments.

But for your own site include whatever your strongest work is.
