Default Icon Critique

Hey guys and gals.

My newest project that I am putting alot of time into is creating a 16x16px icon set. I have fun drawing these little icons and thought it would be a good opportunity for me to have something to give away on my blog. I was wondering if you could take a few minutes and let me know what you thought of them.

Thanks

Adam

I can't really put a finger on anything. I like all of the icons. Very impressive that you can get so much squeezed in to 16x16px. Great work!

Yes, these look great and it sure as hell is a good way to get traffic to your blog. I am looking to give away some free vector downloads in the future as well.

It's a very attractive set, and very well done.

My only concern is that they look so much like the Silk icon set that everyone is getting sick of (or is that just me?). Maybe if you made the colors a little bolder they would be visually more distinct.

Hey guys thanks for all of the wonderful replies. I appreciate the kind words.

I have had some of the same fears that they look too much like the silk set. But there is room for more of the same at times.

I don't mean to sound hash here, but are you justifying copying because there is "room for it"? There are room for more people like Saville, but that doesn't mean I can copy his style

alyCe,

I understand your arguement on this. That what I said may be justifying copying, but my icons are not the exact same as the silk set. The mustang and camaro are very simliar products by you wouldn't say chevy copied ford would you? I have used differect colors, different shapes, and slightly different representations for my icons. I say there is room for the same because there is always going to be room for more 16px icons. I don't believe that I am justifying copying I am providing a simliar product, which is generally known as competition not copying.

I think they look great, just not original enough.

I wouldn't say they look copied from Silk at all, more like they're fairly similar in terms of color choices and the softness of the shapes. Clearly they're an original work.

What I think it comes down to for me is usefulness. If I have a site where I need 16px icons with soft pastels, I'm going to go for Silk; it's a beautifully-executed set, and there's about ten billion different icons, and the license is easy to deal with. I think Adam's set is very nice, and I can see using it, but for it would have more utility for me if it were visually more distinct. I can tell you there's a profound lack of bolder, free 16px icons; even in something as common as the Mac or Vista styles. Those I would use more.

But, let's all keep in mind that Adam is taking a lot of time in creating something to give away to all of us. Certainly he asked for critique, which he's gotten in abundance, but we should also recognize his considerable efforts.
