but seriously, there's some DEEP pitfalls one can fall into while creating digital art by the fad or trend.

trends are not necessarily worn and cliché, but they are once they get overused. a trend is just something popular at the time, and lord knows Web2.0 is jumping head first into the 'overused' category.

This could serve as a good place to list what NOT to do when designing, especially logos and website headers.

-drop shadow cannot 'make' a logo. it should be healthy without one

-gloss can make a design look fresh and new. but beware it doesn't look like every other glossy logo. your logo's originality and creativity conveys that of your blog's/company's/etc.

-diagonal lines are cool, but take notice while you browse how often they're used

-it's much harder to think about what not to do when you create art, but run your logo through the ringer. strip it down, build it up, twist and contort it. does it stand the test? then it's a good logo. does it look like crap if printed, photocopied, then faxed? (it probably will, but) try and figure out WHY.

-your logo and business name is your professional style and personality. if you Spel Ur Biz Name Kewl, you may detract clients.

add to this list! make it a resource for us all, and help me play down the snarky first post of this thread....

Wow...i completely agree. I totally know what you mean and did the same thing with my logo i think its gone through so many changes, until now i think i hit a good point but I am still trying to see if it symbolizes me and everything. I really like your post very good information that I think all designs should be hit with every once in a while.

-research your client and target audience.

-don't throw on every effect known to man. Keeping it simple works best most of the time. Think about why you are using a certain effect.

-don't make design decisions you can't defend/justify (sometimes things just look right but it's much easier to convince people that your design works if you can argue why you made the header pink with repeating smiley faces)

-it's easier to do a successful design if you have an idea first about style/concept/colors etc. instead of just messing around and raping all the effects in Photoshop. Putting it on paper first is a good idea.

Oh and by the way. Your logo is amazing!!

Some good points you made.

I think that beginning designers can fall into this trap. It seems like a good shortcut to just add some effects, but without a strong concept there is no substance to the logo. I use hightights a lot, sometimes other effects, but I also always provide the client with a stripped down black and white version of the logo.

The design looks great GJ man.

And about the posts that can help designers i think it can help beginners but not only them can help the ones that already work like designers. For exemple i love clean work simple logos with great point but, hard lights and all effects filters etc... if are combinated like thay should be then logo can be extremly powerfull, i seriously dont like to much effects on anithing and when i work i try to stay more simple and clean the best way for customer eye .

It looks great, but I would have to agree with Aarlev, you should try sketching something first, not just jump to photoshop and mess around, you could get some ideas from it, but I find it easyer to sketch by hand first,
