Good Morning,
I am new to this forum but I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a few critiques on my work. It is for a design class at school and we have to create a symbol as visual communication but there are 4 steps and I am stumped on the third step. The description is: Typographic Solution Here, you will rely on the actual letters of your chosen word to create a verbal symbol. A verbal symbol is a word representing an object or concept. Explore what happens when you manipulated certain parts of your letterforms to create visual illusions otherwise not available if one just merely typed the word. Investigate upper and lowercase, stacking and removing letterforms, combining characters, removing parts, adding parts, negative and positive space, implied edge, etc. Remain controlled in your manipulation of your letterforms. Do not fall into the trap of drawing "pictures" with your letterforms. Avoid hokey/contrivedd solutions at all costs. Your verbal symbol does not have to visually look like a "koala" as much as it need to feel like one. We had to choose an animal for this project and I chose a koala. I have attached the the typefaces and also a few examples that I have been working with. If anyone can offer any kind of input it would be great appreciated! |

I think you should go in illustrator, and play around more there. Make outlines of the word so that you have more freedom in manipulating the characters. Combine the o and the l, have some letters in upper case and some in lower, remove the stem on the K, fill in the "holes" in the o's and the a... I don't think you have understood what the task means, you should manipulate the letters alot more!
(ps: all my suggestions are just examples, just try and try and mess around with the letters until the word becomes unrecognisable :P) Good luck!

Thanks Michae I will definitely take this into consideration. This part of the project is hard for me to understand your right. I am going to continue to play around with it more and I will post more when I get done.
Thanks Again! |

Some help for your task:
![]() ![]() http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koala Look at these, write down what you see and feel and then start thinking about how manipulating letterforms can achieve the feel of a koala. It's pretty self-evident that you can't achieve the feel of a koala with Futura for example Good luck and keep us updated on the process |

This seems like a really hard thing to do with animals as the subject. I had to do something similar but with an adjective. For example I hadthe word "constrict" and I had made the bottom of the "t" wrapped around the other letters and squeezing them together.
I would maybe start with a brainstorm list of adjectives that come to mind thinking of koalas, it will be a lot easier to work from whatever adjective you come up with.

I came up with a list of adjectives and descriptions of a koala (we had to do that for class as well)
I have been playing with it a little bit more today and I am going to do more sketches but here are a few more ideas I have. Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks |
