i can tell you're making progress, chris. i feel that you're composing things a bit better now. i'm gonna try to be as constructive as i can, because i know you're new. hopefully i'm not too tough on you, but you are asking for criticism.
but some things you need to work on:-what's the method to your color palettes? on the first one the colors are way too jarring. my eyes are almost diverted instantly. or rather, its neon-ness and disjunct presentation of the colors (those jagged shapes in the back) make it difficult to digest the poster and its content. on the second one, it's almost the opposite. since there are so many instances of the colors and similar vibrancy make me kind of gloss over it. -the typography at the bottom of the first one seems uninspired. the typeface, the orientation and spacing... just looks slapped together and added after the fact. -what do you want people to look at first? what should be catching their eye? in the first, the vibrant colors take away from the skater, who i didn't even notice at first. he kind of seems unrelated, stuck in mid air doing nothing. especially with the shadow behind him, it seems like he's heading outward, not upward. or sitting on his ass with his feet in the air.... -if you are to cut pieces out of photos, be sure to take care in blending him in. i see tons of pixels around the skater of the background of the photo you snagged him from. what dpi are you working in? are these to be printed? Listen to Saywells!
![]() also, think more about your typography, or to skip the whole "typography" for now, think about your choice of fonts. Especially on the skate-poster. The second image, I have no idea what is, so I won't comment on it. But on the first, you have: a kind of childish freefont, and either myriad or something very similar. Myriad is Apple's main font, and if you've seen apples product-designs then it's quite the opposite of skate-culture. Try some rougher, grungier, streetish fonts. More comments to come, I'm off ![]() And oh, I think Gino has a blog-entry about good grafitti-style typefaces! ![]() |

Oooh! Thanks alyCe and Saywells. Your comments really helped and I'll try to mess around with it some more.
#1. For this one, I was just practicing cutting out with pen tool haha. This was the first I've done with it. I usually used the magnetic lasso but it hasn't been working out since I've been doing BIGGER pictures and such. It was just a practice and isn't intended to be printed or anything. I will take into account your comments on color and typography. The color was used to attract the attention while not detracting from people's ability to look at it. Haha. I will try to downtone the colors a bit. In addition, the "information" font at the bottom was Myriad Pro. I wanted that so it wouldn't be the focal point. The title "SkateFest 08" and the skater, were to be the focal point. So, yeah. I'll try and tweak it a bit more! ![]() #2. Number 2 was also just a mock up. I was using some new techniques with drop shadow, gradients, and stroke to create a weird effect. It is basically my "design name", CBDesign, put onto there. It is somewhat are too explain. I just wanted critique on like how it flowed together and how it looked in general. Thanks again for your guys' speedy responses and critiques! ~chris |
