Default Dangerous Living

Just finished this a while ago. I was travelling around South East Asia recently for about a year and went through Cambodia. There's still a vast amount of active landmines left in the country which inspired me to do this piece. Stock Photo of the guy is taken by myself in Phnom Penh, the landmine is from a stock photo site. Hope you like it.

Thats pretty crazy, speaking of that issue I remember seeing and reading some stuff about that recently, but im drawing a blank and can't remember where i saw it. I think it was in a recent issue of print or I.D magazine they usually have a lot of articles on world issues and how design relates to it.

I'm not shure about my opinion in this really. Would you mind posting the photo of the man? I actually think that would be a better piece than this. Don't get me wrong, it's a good piece, nice composition and (un)balance but looking at this doesn't really give me anything. Normally that wouldn't be a problem (i enjoy both art and design for the aesthetic too) but this is such a grim theme you've chosen that the lack of mood in the picture. To me this is a photograph, another photograph, some brushes and some drop shadow, which is a shame because I see alot of potential in this piece.

Try to think less about "dee-sign" and more about what you want to say and express. This isn't a comercial piece (is it going to be?), so more the reason for you to draw out the feeling. Try and look at his expression and get a feeling, maybe try doing some textures too, because everything else but him looks really flat.

Yeah You're right. I need to work more on mood and concept and not so much the design. Think I'm gonna start over again on this one. Thanks for the excellent feedback! Made me re-think this whole piece and the purpose of it.

Oh and here's the original photo..
