This tutorial will show you how to make a simple orb.
1. Make a new image, 500x500 with a transparent background. 2. Take your Elliptical Marquee Tool, and make a little white circle. 3. Right click on your layer and selecet "Blending Options" 4. Use this settings: http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/2880/7orbbigay8.png 5. And if you want text, use the next steps. 6. Write your text in the orb, with white. 7. I think it needs a little more of a 3d orb feeling to it. I would try adding a radial gradient and then on top of that making a second circle gradient. Here is what I mean:
