Default Small Studio or Large Company?

Do you prefer or would like to work for a large company or a small design studio? Feel free to discuss the benefits and disadvantages of each work environment.

I only have experience in freelancing and working for a small studio. Although I have really been intrigued by the idea of working for a large advertising agency. I have to do an internship at the end of my schooling so I think I'm going to try and get an internship with Jacksonville's (where I go to school) largest ad agency St. John & Partners.

I would love some insight from someone who has experience in a large agency.

I would really prefer to work for a small design studio. Your relationship with those around you is much more personal and you're not just another number.

I think I would prefer a smaller studio as well.

I think bigger companies have so many rules and restrictions and there tends to be a lot of gossiping, side taking and people being cut throat in large companies where everyone is all about moving up in the ranks.

I know thats stereotyping large companies, but stereotypes wouldn't be stereotypes if they weren't true some of the time =)

Though big companies do have many benefits and usually higher pay and lots of room for advancement.

I'd prefer a smaller studio too. I like having close relationships with the people I work with, because it makes the work environment so much better. And like Tulumbo said, you're not just a number.

But when the time comes, I'll take whatever is offered to me (as long as it's a smart choice).

small studio first...

get your name out there and then a large company asks you to be their creative director

How would you guys feel about growing with a new creative firm from the ground up? If the opportunity arose that you could grow with a company and possibly establish yourself as the chief style at the firm would you take it?

This is my first post and would like to just say hi to everyone, and good work on the forum Gino.

Thank you mazza. I think it would be a great opportunity for the right person. A senior or junior designer would probably feel more comfortable about a big position like that, but it could be a great opportunity for anyone really.

I guess it depends on what the pay would be like, and how big of a change it is from your current job.
