Default typopgraphy rules--orphans & widows

Can anyone shed light on why most designers leave orphans and widows in their page layouts? Supposedly this is poor typography.

I have hard time picking up a magazine that is not full of orphans and widows.

Alot of the time it's really hard to get a line to look right and sometimes it's really the only choice. And most magazines run on a final deadline of 5-days after approved content to actually layout the document. So time and practicality has alot to do with it.

It's bad typography, yes. You'll still find it in magazines but that's unavoidable. I think those rules apply most strictly to typesetting for books etc. But it's nice to do one's best to get rid of them
