You are aware that Arial is basicly identical to Helvetica? Microsoft ripped it off, just made a few, tiny changes... Verdana is a better all-round font for screen, at least for text in big amounts.

My favourite at the moment, is Century gothic. I love how simple and round it is. For serifs, Cochin is the one I like the most right now. I mostly prefer sans serifs though.

I don't want to sound holier-than-thou, but why? You got two fonts that are more or less similar, one is an industri standard, greatly crafted with some nice subtle details. The other is the same minus the details and history, made in a rush with no character whatsoever. If you got a choice between arial and helvetica - ALWAYS use helvetica (you could also succesfully choose something else, depending on the project).

I appreciate that many people prefer Helvetica and regard Arial as just a rip-off, but if that's the case, then you could also argue that Helvetica is a rip-off of Akzidenz Grotesk, or both are just rip-offs of earlier Grotesque faces. I feel the whole rip-off debate is rather pointless as no design is 100% original when most ideas are derived from something else. Don't get me wrong, I like Helvetica, and I'm not saying one is better than the other, I just don't see the harm in using Arial, so I'll continue to use either (or something else) as I see necessary.

Ok, I'm not gonna bother to discuss wherever Helvetica was a rip-off of Akzidenz the same way Arial is to Helvetica. It's really not even the point, if someone wanted a cool font that was almost the same as helvetica but didn't bother paying the loyalties, then go right ahead. The problem is that it's a poor rip-off, instead of stealing and adding, they just stole and forgot some details.

Also, the "earlies grotesques", and that all design steals is pretty far off the point. Take Univers. Most people, by a glance probably wouldn't spot the difference between Univers and Helvetica. Still there is enough a difference that you can spot the difference in appearance. Univers is more diverse, with more varied stroke-sizes etc. Typography is all in the details, and that's also the clue to good typography. Not saying "they look more or less the same, so who cares".

First of all, I didn't say 'they look more or less the same, so who cares' nor have I ever thought that. My reply was simply saying that I'm not against Arial and I like Helvetica (which I also use). I actually didn't start off this very old Arial Vs Helvetica debate, everyone is entitled to their opinion, no need to get offhand. I just came to answer the original poster's question - which I have now done and don't feel the need to dwell on any longer.

Me too. I like the classical font so much. But I think the Baskerville is a little rigid.

Helvetica Neue is pretty much as good as it gets, though I'm very partial to DIN.

As for this Arial vs Helvetica debate - there really isn't any debate to be had. Arial, as a typeface, is appallingly executed, with many mistakes. I never use it myself, and hate to see it used. To be honest, any font associated with Microsoft sucks, aside from Verdana, but then that is only good on screen and should never be used in print.

For a good example of how badly Arial is put together, compare Arial rounded to VAG rounded and see how bad it looks!
